All of the things that accompany a girl in her bedroom. Ouija Board time!

Juvenile destruction

A quick sketchbook painting. I've had no time lately to draw on a whim, so this makes me rather happy.
Imagine the polka dots are flocked velvet and underneath she is wearing a velvet leotard.

Karla Špetić AW10 collection launch.

The Karla Špetić launch was such a blast!
With the delectable pastel printed clothes hung on mannequins and a collection of my paintings set up throughout the Corner Shop, this was an amazing culmination of much hard work, and a really fabulous night.  Everything was impeccably beautiful. The printed pieces made my jaw drop, as the silk they are printed on is luxuriously soft. Plastic fruit hung from the ceiling and miniature cones of Gelato were served on vintage china plates. I've never seen a more beautiful and stylish assortment of people in one room. so many girls with translucent skin! so many amazing clothes! I met many lovely new people, and actually talked for three hours straight.
I created a new range of paintings especially for the exhibit, and even worked on a larger scale.  (After dabbling with paper twice the size of the one i am comfortable with, i'm pleased with the result. will definitely be continuing this for other exhibitions!) Despite my overwhelmed-ness i really got to enjoy myself once the paintings were up on the walls. Even had a shiny new taffeta dress to wear thanks to my amazing Mum.
It was such an honour to exhibit in the Corner Shop, so i think this was the highlight of my year.
It's actually hard to put into words how I am currently feeling. I haven't even begun to process what all these amazing things mean to me yet. I'm just over the moon! Deliriously glad.
The night was made perfect by the company of my marvellous friends, huge portions of chinese food at eating world and late night karaoke. (2 pages of Elvis songs to choose from!)

I only managed to take a few good photos of a couple of the paintings, but they will be on display throughout the Corner Shop for the next couple of weeks. Corner shop, Level 1, Strand Arcade, Sydney, Australia.

Caitlin Shearer for Karla Špetić. AW10.

Okay, it's finally time to reveal a collaboration that i've been keeping under my hat for months now...
Last year I had the pleasure of working with Karla Špetić to create a custom print to grace her AW10 clothing range, Dreamer. Based upon an illustration i had made in the past (Violet, who also features in the print) and out mutual love for Sofia Coppola films, a collection of languid bedroom girls were born onto the paper. The illustrations were then printed onto silk and turned into a cropped blazer, a swishy gathered mini skirt and an elegant dress with cut-out details.
Karla's clothing is beautifully constructed and perfectly feminine. Both elegance and Whimsical charm are captured in this collection, and i'm glad the girls i have created have been given such a gorgeous home. Needless to say, I am very proud of this collaboration and my first foray into the world of fashion.
There shall be a launch party in Sydney to celebrate, and details will be posted in the coming weeks.
Please take a look at Karla's website , where you can view the rest of her beautiful AW10 collection.

With love,
Caitlin Shearer.

Witch Field

Puffing daisies, patting cats.

Lately i Don't feel steady unless: i'm sitting at my desk surrounded by paint, with pencil in hand. Marlene Dietrich book by the bed, page bookmarked with a yellow post-it note. Vitamin C tablets on dressing table. Routine Time!

James Mercer // Begin to draw more boys

Boys: I love the opposite species very much but don't often let them grace the pages of my sketchbook. Who knows why?
(maybe because they don't have luscious hips and i can't put them in dresses and heels.) (maybe not? Lets not delve too far into my heart.)
So to rectify this problem, I am beginning by drawing James Mercer, lead singer of the Shins, who i hold a profound admiration for. The only band that has travelled with me and my ears through highschool and into adulthood, the Shins music holds for me a wealth of nostalgia. I remember being 16 and lying on my bedroom floor, drawing faces in purple gel pens, listening to pink bullets on my mp3 player, and i remember being 19 and listening to wincing the night away whilst playing scrabble and eating too much sugar with new friends. At 20, I'm still particularly fond of the enchanting tunes of that portland band, while the rest of my cd's from teenage-hood lie dormant in the back of my cupboard.
Unfortunately, the Shins have kind of dissolved, but Mercer is still making amazing music, This time turning to Dangermouse to collaborate on the new musical project Broken Bells. All i can say is superb!
So, here is my illustration, Inspired by Mercer's musical stylings, and the need to project some masculinity into my art.

Clumsy Maid

Sketchbook scribbly paintings are making me very happy lately, so i suppose there will be many more to come.
I'm working hard for a show in march, so these help me get the fidgets out of my hands and i don't have to stress about them at all which is such a pleasure.
